Storage Bromley Health and Safety Policy
Storage Bromley is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all employees, customers, visitors, and contractors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our responsibilities and the arrangements we maintain to manage risk across our storage facilities and removal operations.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to prevent injury and ill health and to promote a positive safety culture throughout all aspects of our storage and removal services. We aim to comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. We will provide appropriate resources, training, and supervision to ensure that health and safety is an integral part of our daily activities.
The management team at Storage Bromley is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that health and safety considerations are central to decision-making, planning, and operational practices.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with senior management. Managers and supervisors must ensure that safe systems of work are in place, that staff are informed of relevant procedures, and that incidents and hazards are reported and acted upon promptly.
Employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. They must follow instructions, use any equipment provided correctly, and report hazards, near misses, or incidents without delay.
Contractors, including removal teams and service providers, must work in accordance with this policy, follow site rules, and comply with applicable health and safety regulations at all times while on our premises or working on our behalf.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We conduct and maintain risk assessments for key activities, including storage operations, handling of goods, vehicle movements, loading and unloading, and removal services. These assessments identify hazards and set out control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work include, but are not limited to, guidance on manual handling, use of trolleys and lifting equipment, stacking and storage of goods, access to units, and safe driving practices. These are communicated to employees through training, written procedures, and on-site instructions.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of storage and removal work. Storage Bromley requires that loads are assessed before lifting, and that employees use mechanical aids such as sack trucks, pallet trucks, or lifting devices wherever practical. Team lifting should be used for bulky or heavy items.
Staff receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, including correct posture, load assessment, and movement planning. Customers are encouraged to pack items in manageable sizes and weights, and to ask for assistance from staff or removal teams when needed.
All handling equipment and tools must be used only for their intended purpose, inspected regularly, and taken out of service if any defects are identified.
Vehicle Movements, Loading and Unloading
Our sites and removal operations involve frequent vehicle movements. To reduce risk, we use designated loading areas where possible, clear traffic routes, and clear signage to direct drivers and pedestrians.
Drivers and removal teams must secure vehicles before loading or unloading, check that ramps and tail lifts are properly positioned and in good working order, and ensure that loads are evenly distributed and adequately secured for transport.
Pedestrians must use designated walkways where provided and stay clear of reversing or manoeuvring vehicles. High-visibility clothing may be required in loading areas where appropriate.
Safe Storage of Goods
Goods must be stored in a stable and secure manner, with heavier items placed at lower levels and lighter items above. Customers and staff should avoid creating overhanging or unstable stacks within units or storage areas.
Hazardous or prohibited items must not be stored. This includes flammable, explosive, corrosive, or otherwise dangerous substances, as well as items that may pose a risk to health, safety, or the environment. Information on prohibited items is available from our team and forms part of our site rules.
Workplace Environment and Housekeeping
We are committed to maintaining a clean, orderly, and well-maintained environment. A high standard of housekeeping reduces the risk of slips, trips, and falls, and enables safe access to storage units and loading areas.
Walkways, stairwells, and fire exits must be kept clear at all times. Spills should be cleaned promptly and reported where necessary. Any damage to floors, doors, lighting, or other fixtures that could affect safety must be reported immediately.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Bromley maintains fire safety arrangements appropriate to its operations. These may include fire detection and alarm systems, clearly marked escape routes, fire extinguishers, and assembly points.
Staff are briefed on emergency procedures, including evacuation routes, assembly areas, and how to raise the alarm. Evacuation routes and exits must never be blocked. Customers and visitors must follow staff instructions in the event of an alarm or emergency.
Training, Information and Supervision
We provide health and safety induction and ongoing training appropriate to each role, including safe manual handling, use of equipment, emergency procedures, and site-specific rules. Additional briefing is provided for employees and contractors involved in removals and the handling of heavy or awkward items.
Information on health and safety requirements, site rules, and emergency arrangements is made available to employees, contractors, and customers. Supervisors monitor work practices and provide guidance and corrective actions where necessary.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported as soon as possible to a manager or designated person. Details are recorded and, where necessary, incidents are investigated to identify root causes and implement corrective measures.
We review incident data periodically to identify trends and opportunities to improve our safety performance across both storage and removal activities.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Storage Bromley monitors compliance with this Health and Safety Policy through site inspections, discussions with staff, review of incident records, and feedback from customers and contractors.
This policy and its associated procedures are reviewed regularly and updated as needed to reflect operational changes, new legal requirements, and industry best practice. Revisions are communicated to employees and contractors, and any additional training required will be provided.
By implementing this Health and Safety Policy, Storage Bromley seeks to protect everyone who works with us or uses our storage and removal services, and to promote a culture where safety is a shared responsibility.
